KHS Jazz Band Membership
Students in the KHS Jazz Band must be full functioning members of the Kaufman Band Program in the marching band/wind ensemble class. The Members of the Jazz Band perform all over Texas and are considered elite representatives of Kaufman High School and its band programs. Students in the Jazz Band must maintain a high level of scholastic achievement and many of its members have recieved scholarships to colleges and universities for their hard work and achievement.
More About the Jazz Band...
The band has enjoyed continued success competing annually at Jazz Festivals around Texas. They have participated in the Tarleton Jazz Festival, Temple Jazz Festival, the Collin Jazz Festival, and at UIL Solo & Ensemble competition. The band always ranks well and has been rewarded with numerous “Outstanding Soloist” awards and “Outstanding Performance” awards.
Each year, the KHS Jazz Ensemble performs in the North Texas area during their annual “Swingin’ Christmas Tour.” The band will perform 12-15 times over a 2-week period at the area Elementary Schools, Nursing Homes, and Senior Citizen Centers. They also perform at North Park Mall as part of their “Sounds of the Season” program and at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas.
For the past few years, the KHS Jazz Ensemble has performed the National Anthem at a Frisco Roughriders baseball game. At the game, they also play a pre-game and post-game concert and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” and “God Bless America” during the 7th
Inning Stretch. These performances have been for sold out crowds of over 10,000 spectators.
This year, the KHS Jazz Ensemble performed a pre-game concert for the Dallas Stars. A few members of the group have formed a combo known as Big Red. Big Red performed during the 1st
Each Spring, the Band performs for the community during the KHS Jazz Spring Concert. The band features a guest artist each year at this concert. These artists have included The Tarleton State University Jazz Ensemble, the Joshua Bradford Quartet, Rick Stitzel, Freddie Mendoza, Kris Berg and Butch Miles. The band has also commissioned 2 pieces that have been premiered at this concert. These charts are “Black an’ Blues” by Rick Stitzel and “Flew the Coop” by Kris Berg. The band’s third commission will be this year by Texas Native and Chicago composer, trumpet, band leader Shane Jonas.
The Band has recorded 6 Live in Concert CDs. Proceeds from the 2 “Christmas Live” CDs benefit a local Charity.
