Dyslexia

Definition of Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.

Characteristics of Dyslexia

Few people with dyslexia exhibit all the signs of the disorder. Some common signs are:

  • Lack of awareness of sounds in words, rhymes, or sequence of sounds and syllables in words
  • Difficulty decoding words - word identification
  • Difficulty encoding words - spelling
  • Poor sequencing of numbers, of letters in words, when read or written, e.g.: b-d, sign-sing; left-felt; soiled-solid; scared-sacred; 12-21
  • Difficulty expressing thoughts in written form
  • Delayed spoken language
  • Imprecise or incomplete interpretation of language that is heard
  • Difficulty in expressing thoughts orally

Career Development and Planning Resources

You have probably been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Some students know exactly what they want to do, but most haven’t got aclue. The idea of choosing a career is scary, and it feels like the future is far away. You are busy with classes, activities, sports, and fun to think about what career you want to pursue after graduation from high school.

You will save a lot of time and money if you have a direction in life, as opposed to just finishing high school and worrying about it later. If you choose a career direction now, you can select classes and activities that will help you work toward your goals. It makes sense to have an idea of what you want to do after you graduate. Career planning is a critical step and is essential to your success.
